"Control the most advanced starfighters and outstanding pilots in the galaxy! In X-Wing Miniatures Game, you take the role of squad leader and command a group of merciless Imperial or daring Rebel pilots in furious ship-to-ship space combat. Featuring stunningly detailed and painted miniatures, X-Wing recreates exciting Star Wars space battles from small engagements of only a couple of crafts, to large conflicts where multiple squadrons clash. Select and equip your ships, pick your crew, plan your attack, and complete your mission."
I love this game. I do not get a lot of time to play it, but when I do, I always remember why I enjoy it so much. It's beautifully simplistic in design and yet has many ways to add complexity and strategy. Whenever I have a parent in the store wanting to introduce their child to miniature wargaming, I start here. The models are great and already painted. The theme is familiar to most people, and the starter box has everything needed to play a game. Obviously, there are many more ships and more complex upgrades, but the starter box is all two people need to play.
The Starter Box comes with Quick Start rules provided by FFG (which leave out some of the more complex aspects of the game). Using these rules, I taught a five year old how to play. We had to make some adjustments in the teaching method. I would always pick my moves first. Then the young boy could use the templates to pick his movements. That gave him the concrete visual the templates provide to see where his choices would take his ships. Then we proceeded following all of the Quick Start rules. He had so much fun, and I felt successful because he was able to play with only a little coaching. FFG made a brilliant game that is accessible to players of all ages and experience.
